| The Pennsylvania Department of Education created Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening to describe what students should know and be able to do with the English language at four grade levels (third, fifth, eighth, and eleventh). The standards provide the targets for instruction and student learning essential for success in all academic areas. All teachers assist their students in learning the Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening Standards through multiple classroom situations in all the subject areas.
