It's YOUR Graduation Project!
The Graduation Project is a requirement for all high school students in the state of Pennsylvania. Though individual districts may shape the overall project, the Pennsylvania Department of Education states, "the purpose of this culminating project is to assure that students are able to apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate significant knowledge and understanding."
The Graduation Project is an independent, personalized learning experience, presented through a culminating exhibition. It is designed to give students an authentic opportunity to direct their own learning. It allows for differences in aptitude, learning style, and interest, ensures high expectations, personalizes learning through the use of small advisory groups, and links students, teachers, and members of the outside community in a common academic goal. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate problem-solving, self-directed learning, decision-making, and independent research while investigating a specialized area of interest. CB has recently revised its project to better meet the needs of today’s students. Beginning with the class of 2009, students can choose from three types of projects: career exploration, community service or curriculum extension.
Students will select a topic and present a proposal in May of their junior year. After working on the project for approximately three months in the summer prior to senior year or during the senior year, students will present their work to a panel of adults in November or April of senior year.
Specific expectations for the Graduation Project are clearly defined in the student manual. Both students and parents should review the manual carefully, and as always, direct any questions to their high school's Graduation Project office.
