Art Goes To School

Each year, Barclay is visited by two special organizations that bring art to the school.  Art goes to school is a volunteer organization of parents, who bring different pieces of art to each classroom.  Students then share in discussions about the specific pieces of art.  The Artmobile is a traveling van that has many different pieces of art work all housed in one place.  Classrooms visit with the art teacher, working on hands-on activities and discussing the artwork.

Author Visit

Each year, our students anticipate a visit with an author.   We alternate between authors, illustrators and storytellers to offer the students a variety of different ways that books can be produced.  For the 2008-2009 school year, Barclay will be visited by author Cheryl Harness.  On Tuesday, November 18th MS. Harness will be sharing with students how she researches to write her books.  That's right, Ms. Harness writes nonfiction, and history books in particular!  Please visit her website to learn more about this history buff!

Band Concert

Each year, fifth and sixth grade instrumental students join the band, along with having individual lessons.  The band performs once during the holiday season and again in the spring.

Barclay’s Birthday

Each year the students of Barclay celebrate the birthday of our school namesake with a treat from the Home and School.  John Barclay was born in January, over 250 years ago.

Barclay’s Building Blocks

Our Barclay Building Blocks Program is making some changes.  The blocks represent Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Honesty, Perseverance and Family.  The school community will focus on one block for a two month period.  Classrooms read books, work on activities, and have class meetings to reinforce the different blocks.  Students can earn building blocks if they show one of the above behaviors.  Each Friday two students from each grade have their building blocks pulled to represent all of the good behavior that has been shown by all students all week.  Those lucky winners will get to pick a prize from the treasure chest.  In addition, we have the Proud Patriot   If students have not received any behavior reports for the month they have the chance to be the Proud Patriot.  Once a month the Proud Patriot is pulled for each class and that student wins a gift certificate from a local business.

Bistro

The Barclay Bistro is a special restaurant that is open once a month at Barclay Elementary.  Students dine on real plates with real silverware, served by waitresses and a maitre d' (Mr. Estep), and are entertained by musical selections.  Invitation to the Bistro is based on the Barclay Building Blocks.  Throughout each month, the students are working toward behaviors that show responsibility, respect, caring, honesty and a sense of family in the cafeteria.  At the end of each lunch period, tickets are awarded to the tables that showed the correct behavior.  Then at the end of each month, one ticket is pulled from the box and that class attends the bistro.  The more tickets a class earns, the better chance they'll have to attend the bistro!

On the day of the Bistro, our parent volunteers decorate the library walls and tables using the art work of the students of Barclay.

Book Fair

Barclay is lucky to have two book fairs each year, one in the fall and one in the spring.  Students and parents are invited to come purchase books from a wonderful selection of titles.  More information will come home with students as the dates for the fairs are set.

Buddy Classes

To promote cooperation and enhance learning most classes at Barclay have a buddy class.  An older and younger child work one on one on a variety of projects.  They may create a craft for use with our community projects or do another activity which provides an enriching  learning experience for both buddy partners.

Celebrate Education Week

Central Bucks School District celebrates American Education Week in October.

THANK YOU TO ALL PARENTS WHO WERE ABLE TO VISIT WITH US DURING CELEBRATE EDUCATION WEEK!

**In order for everyone to enjoy their visit to Barclay, please consider the following:

  1. Guests must sign in and wear a visitor's badge
  2. Infants and toddlers typically disrupt instruction so we discourage them from accompanying your visit.
  3. Due to our lunch schedule, we do not have "luncheon" visits.  However, you are welcome to sign your child out for a lunch excursion if you are already here.

Community Service

Family is one of our Barclay Building Blocks.  We focus a lot on our classroom families, our home families and our larger community family.  Barclay students are very involved in community service.  Individual grade levels participate in service activities in the community.

Field Day

Barclay students look forward to this event all year!  Every June students gather on the upper field  for a fun-filled afternoon of tug of war.  The blue and white team from each class compete against one another to earn points.  The following day is a full day of sport and team related activities.

Fit Friday

Once a month classes are encouraged to wear their workout gear.  Each class does something special to promote physical activity.  Sometimes they go for a walk, others exercise to music, and still others play kickball or other games.  The students enjoy the activities and the day helps promote our district wellness goal!

Math With The Principal

In order to promote math achievement and to acknowledge student effort in this area, selected students from each class will be invited to the principal's office once a month for Math with the Principal.  Students selected for this honor will receive a commendation and a button acknowledging their visit to the principal's office.

Move Up Day

Students have the opportunity to meet their teacher for the next school year on this day.  For one hour, students "move up" to their new classroom and learn a little bit about what to expect from their next school experience.  Look for information about the date of Move Up Day in the spring.

On A Roll

This program encourages and recognizes individual students' efforts to improve his or her academic achievement.   Any student in grades 3-6 who, through his/her desire to improve, has successfully raised his or her level of performance within a given marking period, will receive a certificate and will be recognized at an assembly.   The assemblies will take place at the end of the second and fourth marking periods.

Read With The Principal

Reading is the key to success!  To acknowledge and reinforce this message, teachers will select one student each month to read to the principal.  Following a meeting with Mr. Estep, readers will receive a letter of commendation and a special button.

Red Ribbon Week

Our students are drug free!  In October they really show it by wearing red ribbons,  creating posters, decorating bags and talking about why drugs are bad.

School Store

Two mornings a week, between 8:40 and 9:00, students can be found shopping the aisles of the School Store.  6th grade PEN students are responsible for the store, from purchasing the items that they feel will sell, to pricing those items, to collecting the money, to advertising their merchandise.  Feel free to stop in on one of the busiest stores in Warrington!

Spelling Bee

The fifth and sixth grade students are invited to participate in the spelling bee.  Each classroom has a spell-off to find a winner, then those winners compete against the winners from the other classrooms to find a school winner.  that student goes on to the county competition, with the ultimate hope of being the United States Spelling Bee Champion!

Spring Fair

The Spring Fair is a fun-filled Saturday in May that includes games, contests, food, and a popular silent auction.  Parents will be called by the room parents to staff the activities sponsored by each homeroom.  Work begins in late fall to plan this big event.
