Grade 1 and Grade 2 Benchmarks
What is Reading Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to decode words or text smoothly with little effort so that the reader can focus on making sense and responding to the text. Components of fluency are phrasing, attention to punctuation, reading rate, expression, problem solving and self-correcting. Fluent reading is smooth reading and sounds like you are talking.
Why is Fluency Important?
Fluency is linked with comprehension because to read text fluently the reader has to understand what is being read. Also, when reading fluently, the reader frees up his/her brain to think about the story.
