Calling school when your child is absent
When your child is home from school due to illness, we would appreciate a telephone call letting us know. That way, when the attendance absence telephone calls are made, the school will not need to call you. You can call anytime after 7:10 AM. If we do not hear from you before 9:30 A.M., you will receive an automated phone call.
Picking up - signing out students for appointments
For safety considerations, we require you to come into the building to pick up your child. We do not want children waiting outside the building for you to pick them up. Depending on the situation, you should report to the main office or the nurse's office for pickup. Ideally, if you are picking up your child for an appointment - please have him/her bring a note to the main office first thing upon arrival at school and they can be issued a dismissal pass from class. You may be asked to show identification when you pick up - we have new staff in both the main office and the nurse's office - we just don't know everyone and we are concerned with security and safety. STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO LEAVE LENAPE AND WALK TO THEIR SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT. A PARENT/GUARDIAN MUST BE PRESENT TO "SIGN OUT" THEIR STUDENT.
Students are not allowed to call home directly to be picked up for illness. In cases when a student becomes ill during the school day, the school nurse will contact the parent and coordinate this dismissal.
Getting messages to students
Many times parents will call during the school day and want us to get a message immediately to their child. We "page" students for messages between classes and ask them to come to the office for the message. We do not interrupt classes for student messages - unless it is considered a major emergency.
Forgotten materials and lunches
Forgotten lunches and other materials may be dropped off at the office. If your child has called home to ask you to bring something in, remind him/her to check at the office. If you are dropping off an item, which your student has forgotten, please bring it to the office. Fill out one of the slips on the counter with their name and grade, tape it to the article and we will call them down to pick it up between classes.
Student use of telephones
There are two pay telephones inside the building and one outside of the building for student use. Telephones may be used without permission before and after school. During class time and lunch time, a pass from the teacher/supervisor is needed. Wireless/cell phones are not to be used within the building during the school day. Pagers are prohibited in schools by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania law.
Leaving campus once students have arrived
Once students have arrived to the Lenape campus, by either school district bus, private automobile, or by walking, they may not leave the campus to go into town or onto property adjoining the school. At the end of the school day, students cannot leave the campus and then return to take the bus home or to come back into school. Students who walk to Lenape tend to gather on the property of the church next door (sometimes to smoke). The church and the school have asked the borough police to patrol this area. We would like you to instruct your children to not "hang-out" on neighboring properties.
Students staying after school
Often students stay after school for help from teachers or for activities and meetings. Students should not just stay at school to "hang out". This is considered a "school safety" and supervision concern. Students not involved in activities are expected to leave the building by 3 PM. Depending on the number of students, we may require students who have finished with meetings, activities, or help, to report to a specific room and wait to be picked up or to take the late bus at 5 PM.
Health Room medications
All medication, whether prescription or non-prescription, must be kept in the health office. Medication will be administered to students during school hours, only when such administration is needed for the student to remain in school. Medication must be sent to the school in the original, properly labeled container, and must be accompanied by a Medication Dispensing form signed by both the physician (or dentist) and the parent. Please note the change on the Emergency Card about the administration of acetaminophen, ibuprofen and benadryl. If you give permission on this card - then these medications may be administered by the school personnel.
Approval for family trips and vacations
If, during the school year, your family is planning to take a trip or vacation which will take your child out of school, we do have a form which should be completed. These are available in the school office, and, if possible, completed at least 2 weeks before the anticipated absence.
