START:

STUDENTS AT RISK TEAM (START):

The START Program is an intervention team staffed by teachers, counselors, the school nurse, the “building” administration, and appropriate agencies from the community.  START members are trained to identify and refer “high risk” students for appropriate assessment.  HIGH RISK CONCERNS may include substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, eating disorder, depression, school phobia, suicide prevention, and truancy.

Referrals for high-risk students come from students, parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and/or community members.  If there is a concern for the physical and emotional well being of a student, contact a “START” member.  Members of the START team are Dr. Michael Parry (Assistant Principal), Cathy Begg, Mandy Cammann and Jeff Klein (counselors), and Peggy Keppler (school nurse). Additional faculty participates as their schedule permits. Referral forms are available from the guidance department.

Team interventions occur for the benefit of the students, their families, and the school by relaying factual information to the students and their families.  The goal of the intervention is to encourage the students to seek further assistance in addressing the problems that face them.

March 2008

 What Goes Around Comes Around

This year, in partnership with all Central Bucks schools, the Central Bucks Healthier Community Team, the Outback Steakhouse in Jamison, and the Bucks County Herald, Tamanend will participate in the Boomerang Youth Recognition Award program. This program helps encourage and reward the types of behaviors that all youth NEED TO POSSESS in order to be responsible, caring and strong in the face of peer pressures and life challenges.

The traits recognized in the Boomerang Program are highlighted by the 40 Assets Principle.  The “40 Assets” include 40 positive experiences, behaviors, and personal qualities such as “caring,” “safety,” “sense of purpose,” “planning and decision making,” etc. You can find out more about the 40 Assets by visiting http://www.search-institute.org/assets/.  A list of the 40 Assets is on the right side of this newsletter.  We each play a role in helping the 40 Assets come alive in the day to day experiences of students.  All of our efforts to truly integrate these assets into students’ lives will help them become more successful in school and in life!

The Boomerang Award will recognize students monthly (one from elementary, middle, and high school) for living by the 40 Assets principle.  Each month, ONE of 40 Assets will be the focus of the award.  For March asset #17 Creative activities. (Young person participates in creative activities which have a direct positive impact on himself/herself and others. Their creative activity can take a variety of forms- music, drama, art, writing, or any other activity.)

Each month, anyone in the community can nominate a Tamanend student by filling out a ballot and turning it in to the Guidance Office.  Students will also be able to self-nominate.

A committee will review all nominees each month, and select ONE candidate to be submitted to the district wide contest.  Winners will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate, gift certificates, and an invitation to attend a luncheon especially for winners from the entire school year.  In addition, Tamanend will hang a congratulatory letter for 1 month.

This is a great way for Tamanend to recognize our students for what they are doing RIGHT!!

YOUR child could be nominated!  Please, take the time to discuss each month’s highlighted Asset with your child.  Also, encourage him or her to recognize the positive qualities about his/her own classmates so that they can nominate others.

We look forward to receiving many nominations.   As a parent/guardian and member of the community, you are certainly encouraged to come to the school to submit a nomination!

Thanks for playing such an integral role in helping Tamanend improve the well being of your child!
