Our classroom follows a Writing Workshop approach.  During our writing instruction, we break down our hour into the following blocks:

  • Spelling - About 10 minutes
  • Mini Lesson - 10 to 20 minutes
  • Writing, teacher conferencing, and peer conferencing - 20 to 30 minutes
  • Group share and closure - 5 to 10 minutes
Grammar is incorporated into various mini lessons throughout the year.  Keyboarding or handwriting is expected for the finished “good copy”.

Students explore the 5 domains of writing; content, focus, organization, style, and conventions through mini lessons and then apply them in their writing to create strong writing pieces. View a sample Narrative Domain Scoring Rubric.

Following the Pennsylvania Writing Standards, Students will write in various modes of Narrative, Informative, Persuasive, Literature Responses, and Literary Genre Pieces.

Below, you will find links that provide more a timeline for various writing modes along with student examples.  Please take the time to review our work.
